Fact or Fiction: Finding the Right Fuel

Today, we will dispel another common auto maintenance misconception to keep you and your vehicle safe on the road. Today’s Query: Does premium gas makes your car improve performance?

The difference between premium and regular, unleaded gas is the octane levels. The standard gas is measured at 87 octanes, and the premium at 91. Meaning the premium gas stands up to higher compression before it detonates. Luxury and high-performing vehicles, more than likely, would require higher octane levels. However, for your everyday vehicles, it might be a different story. Refer to your car’s manual for recommendations. If it doesn’t specify that your vehicles can only take premium gas, it’s not required. Using premium gas where your car typically takes regular will not give you better MPG. If you end up putting regular gas in your premium engine, keep an ear out for a knocking sound. This knock is a hint that your engine is not too happy with the change.
